Being a crazy Trekkie, like some of us are, I’ve seen all of the original episodes dozens of times. So much so, that I know all of the characters lines and can reel them off before the character does, when I am re-watching my favourite episodes.

The same goes for some of the movies later released, and most notably, The Wrath of Khan released in 1982. I was pretty young at the time the movie was released. Having seen the original episode which aired in 1967 with Khan, I was captivated by The Wrath of Khan, the first 10 times I saw it. I can hear my wife commenting on the fact that I have seen this movie at least a dozen times every time I re-watch it!

One character introduced in The Wrath of Khan was Saavik, a Vulcan who was Mr. Spock’s protégé. I remember when I first saw this actor thinking she was a very beautiful Vulcan and different from the Vulcans we had come to know. The actor was Kirstie Alley, then 31 years old.

After that part her career exploded as Rebecca Howe on Cheers (1987–1993), for which she received an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe in 1991. Movies followed like Look Who’s Talking (1989), For Richer or Poorer (1997), and Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999).

She won her second Emmy Award in 1994 for the television film David’s Mother. In 1997, Kirstie received another Emmy nomination for her work in the crime drama series The Last Don. In 2005, she played a fictionalized version of herself on Showtime’s Fat Actress. After a several years hiatus, Kirstie returned to acting in 2013 with the title role on the sitcom Kirstie. In 2016, she appeared on the Fox comedy horror series Scream Queens.

In 2011 she partnered with Maksim Chmerkovskiy in Dancing with the Stars where they came in second place. Maksim had this to say recently … “You were one of the most unique people I have ever met and easily one of the brightest moments of my personal and professional life.” 

In 2017 I had the privilege to meet Kirstie Alley. My thoughts went immediately to her character Saavik, the Vulcan I watched in 1982 and in every re-run after it. I told her instantly that she was the best female Vulcan of all time and that I was disappointed she didn’t continue as Saavik.
Kirstie told me she wanted to continue the role and gave me the inside scoop why she thought it didn’t happen. I proceeded to inundate her with all the lines from The Wrath of Khan, to the point where she finally snapped politely at me, “How many times did you see that movie?!”
I replied, “Kirstie, you have no idea.”

Kirstie was and is an amazing person. You have to have met her to really get it. She is straight up, honest, to the point, caring, passionate, and every other positive word you can think of. I could easily talk to her; or make her laugh, and she of course was brilliant at doing that herself.

At the end of the trip she gave me a picture of Saavik and her signature on it which I’ve had displayed in my home since. That was Kirstie Alley. Anyone that came in her wake was touched and uplifted by her beautiful soul.

Live long and prosper Kirstie. I hope to meet you again.

1. To get the role of Saavik, she had to beat out a lot of competition; she brought passion and tears to the role, something no one dared to bring to the role – and she won!

3. Be real. She mentioned it wasn’t in the script to cry at the end of Wrath of Khan, she was literally sad that Mr. Spock had died she relayed later and they decided to keep that take in the movie. It was real.
4. Spot when you have an opportunity and take advantage of it. Kirstie used her weight gain to be a spokesperson for Jenny Craig and later did a show on the same subject. She took a situation that could have been problematic, and instead turned it to her advantage.
5. Take risks, at age 60 she competed in Dancing with the Stars. Who does that? Kirstie Alley did.
