The Rolling Stones -

The Rolling Stones is an English rock band that formed in London in 1962. Active for six decades, they are one of the most popular and enduring bands of the rock era, heck of any era, for that matter!

Going back in time, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger became childhood friends and classmates in 1950 in Dartford, Kent. Jagger then formed a garage band with his friend Dick Taylor in the mid-’50s, mainly playing material by Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Howlin’ Wolf, and Bo Diddley. Mick then met Keith again in 1961 and the rest is amazing history.

In 1967, the last time the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup (sorry, I felt compelled by that date to say that), the group had the double-sided hit “Ruby Tuesday” / “Let’s Spend the Night Together.” In 1968, it was “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Honky Tonk Women.” Then, in 1969, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” That was 5 consecutive #1 albums in the U.K. Not a bad start!

The Rolling Stones have sold over 240 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists OF ALL TIME! Among their achievements, they have won 3 Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, were inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and the U.K. Music Hall of Fame in 2004.

In 2003, the group headlined at the Toronto Rocks event to help reinvigorate tourism after the SARS crisis. Mick Jagger and the band moved tours in Europe just to support our cause with funds raised going to health-care and hospitality workers impacted by the travel travel restrictions imposed on the city.

With the help of about 15 other acts and almost half a million people in attendance, they were able to help erase the negative messages with regards to Toronto.

A prime example of the power of artists, leaders and people working together to put out positive messages and overcome adversity.

Of their early writing experience, Keith Richards said, “The amazing thing is that although Mick and I thought these songs were really puerile and kindergarten-time, every one that got put out made a decent showing in the charts. That gave us extraordinary confidence to carry on, because, at the beginning, songwriting was something we were going to do in order to say to Andrew [Loog Oldham], ‘Well, at least we gave it a try …'” Mick Jagger also said, “We were very pop-orientated. We didn’t sit around listening to Muddy Waters; we listened to everything. In some ways it’s easy to write to order … Keith and I got into the groove of writing those kinds of tunes; they were done in ten minutes. I think we thought it was a bit of a laugh, and it turned out to be something of an apprenticeship for us.”

I could honestly write about this band all day! Their achievements are astonishing. The successful actions they took can be replicated by any business.
